James Bates Baker died at his home in Waxahachie Wednesday night after an illness of only a few hours, caused by a brain hemorrhage.

Mr. Baker was born at Grandville or Cookville (d/c) TN, the son of James and Matilda Hughes Baker, both born TN, coming to Texas in 1890. He was a graduate of Doyle College and, for some 33 years, was devoted to the education of the young, having taught for many years in many of the schools near Waxahachie.

In 1890, he married Mattie Minor in Franklin KY. They had twin boys, Leland and Landon.

Survivors included his wife and two sons, both of whom were former Trinity University students. Leland was teaching in the Canyon, TX, Normal School, and Landon, connected with the Dallas schools, at the time of their father's death.

An obituary appeared in the Waxahachie Daily Light. Information for his death certificate was provided by his wife.
