Alfred John Palfrey was a British Home Child who was emigrated to Canada through the Dr. Barnardo Homes. He was born in Cambridge, England to a single mother. In Canada, Alfred eventually made his way to Manitoba where he worked for the family of James Fox. In the 1910 Dr. Barnardo magazine, Alfred mentions he is working for the Fox family in Manitoba.

Alfred enlisted if the First World War, at the age of 30, on 2 May 1916 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His NOK was Walter Palfrey of Ipswich, Suffolk, England. In his records, his mother is noted as deceased.

Alfred was KIA on 2 September 1918, his records note: Shortly after his Company had reached their objective and were occupying a trench East of Dury, he was struck in the head by shrapnel from an enemy shell and killed.
