Mrs. Nannetta Jolene "Nan" Forrest, 80, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 11, 2022 at 6:14 am at Elkhart General Hospital. She had been in ill health. Nan was born in Sikeston, Missouri on June 19, 1942 to the late Cleo and Ardella (Gay) Wright. On July 28, 1979, she married George L. Forrest, II in Elkhart. He passed away on November 13, 2008.

Surviving Nan are sons Cory (Jeannette) Forrest Pulliman of Dallas, Texas, Eugene Sutton of St. Paul, Minnesota, George Forrest, III of Indianapolis, Gary (Shilynne) Nelson of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Jerome "Jerry" Sutton of Roseland; daughters Loretta (The Rev. Steven) Barnes, Stephanie Forrest, Charlotte Sutton, Regina (the Hon. Mayor Rod) Roberson and MsVerna (Lawrence) Halliburton, all of Elkhart, Marlene Jackson, Atlanta, Georgia, Deborah Forrest of Denver, Colorado and Cynthia Hatfield-Williams of Saginaw, Michigan and an extremely large and loving host of grand, great grand and great-great grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and good friends, including Nan's close friend Norma Bonds, who was lovingly known as "Aunt Normie" by Nan's kids. Preceding Nan in passing are daughters Carolyn and Rhonda Sutton and a brother, Nelson Harris.

The Reverend Danny Brown and the congregation at the Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, 802 W. Garfield Avenue, Elkhart, are honored to host Nan's homegoing services as she was considered a church elder. Homegoing services will start at 11:00 am with a gathering of family and friends preceding that at 10:00 am on Saturday, December 17, 2022. Burial will follow at Little Pine Cemetery in Goshen and Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart has been assisting the family.

Nan was an industrial seamstress in the manufacturing sector for many years, retiring from Brill Seating in Elkhart in 2019.

She had an attractive, warm personality that immediately allowed her to endear herself with just about anyone. She was a HUGE "social butterfly" and absolutely loved to walk around and visit neighbors with her pittie-mix sidekick Sheba always close at her side. She also made her regular rounds to Kroger's, Hot Spot, Family Dollar and CVS; sometimes daily; but most figured her "errands" were more about checking on the status of the neighborhood and seeing whether or not anyone was in need. Well-meaning and civic-minded, Nan cared about those around her and celebrated the good that was present inside of everyone.

Nan also had a very devout side as well, and was a regular, well-loved and well-versed parishioner at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Church, where she served as a missionary and a deaconess, sang in the choir, served on the kitchen committee and taught Sunday School. She considered her church her extended family and would do anything for her pastor and the congregation.

Despite the fact that she considered her church as her family, her heart actually belonged to all of her grandchildren, who would happily come and go at grandma's house all day long. Perhaps it was because she was all-inclusive, or perhaps it was because she accepted everyone for who they were; no one denied the fact that Nan had a heart of gold that was full of love and concern.

Nan was a beautiful, loving and outgoing lady who brightened the hearts of everyone around her, and you always knew you had a friend who would stand with you if need be. The world has lost a loving soul. We prefer to say that Heaven has gained one.

Friends and family wishing to make a donation in Nan's memory may do so by donating to the American Cancer Society or to the cause of one's choice.
