He was the eldest son of Joseph and Martha Jane Holtom, and he had eight siblings. Baptised 6 Oct 1889 at Hampton Lucy, Warwickshire, England.
He joined the Royal Warwickshire Regiment on the 22nd November 1904, giving his age as 17. Fred is recorded on the 1911 census as a Private with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in Ceylon and India. His regiment landed in France on 22nd August 1914.
He is also commemorated upon the War Memorial in Coleshill, Warwickshire, although he never lived in that area, his parents and some of his siblings lived there at the time of his death, both his parents are buried at Coleshill Parish Church.
