Civil War Confederate Army Soldier, Folk Figure. Namesake of the traditional folk ballad, "Hang down your head, Tom Dooley/hang down your head and cry/killed poor Laura Foster/now you're going to die." Laura Foster was supposedly stabbed to death by her boyfriend Tom Dooley in 1866, but rumor has it she may have actually been killed out of jealousy by her own cousin, Ann Melton, who was having an affair with Tom while married to someone else. Tom never confessed, but hanged for the killing all the same. She is buried about five miles away from him.
