Son of George William Mather and Elvira Warren.
.
He married Emily Rosina "Nellie" Thompson on April 1, 1860, in Fair Haven or Woodstock, VT. [Marriage records for both locations]
.
Warren was wounded in action at the Battle of Cedar Creek, VA, on October 19, 1864. Surgeons amputated his left leg up to the thigh, then five days later transported him to Jarvis U.S. General Hospital in Baltimore, where he died of complications from gangrene on Dec. 15, 1864.
.
His father traveled from Vermont to Baltimore to be with his son, and was there when Warren died. According to the "Record of Death and Internment," he brought Warren's remains home to Bridgewater, VT, where they were buried on December 18th.
.
Nevertheless, it appears that Warren has a cenotaph in the Arlington National Cemetery with a different middle initial.
.
Warren Mather's letters to his wife Nellie during the Civil War can be seen at the website: Vermont in the Civil War.
