Johann Harmes was born in Elsdorf, Amt. Zeven, Hannover. The son of Hans Harmes and Anna Maria Bruns. He came to America in the late 1830's and settled in Ottawa county Ohio. He married Frederika Sophie (Rachel) Gielow about 1854. They had 9 children. Sophie married Fred Eppling and moved to Moville, Iowa, as did Henry and Harmon. Johann Theodor lived in Port Clinton, Ohio, Maria married Herman Schieleit and they lived in Oklahoma,Caroline married James Boose and they moved to Kansas. Johann's wife Rachel also moved to Moville, Iowa and is buried there.
