OBITUARY:
DIED--In this city, on Sunday night, March 3d, 1872, John L. Starkey, aged 53 years.
Mr. Starkey had been a citizen of Salem for many years and had taken a prominent part in its business prosperity until ill health sapped his strength and made him unable longer to engage in active pursuits.
Mr. Starkey was a man of probity and sterling worth. He was always popular and esteemed among his fellow citizens, and they will treasure his memory with sincere respect. Death came as a grateful relief from suffering and we hear of his decease with a knowledge that he waited for it patiently and longed for it as a release from pain.
Among the old citizens of our town not one but will regret that we shall see his face no more. The funeral will take place from the house today at 2 o'clock p.m. Rev. A. F. Waller officiating. Friends generally are invited to attend.
