Wife of Thomas Sumter, Jr. Daughter-in-law of Thomas and Mary Cantey Sumter (Revolutionary War General) Her parents sent her to the United States during the French Revolution. She and Thomas had 7 children. Thomas was an ambassador to Brazil. During her trips to France and Brazil, she brought many tree seedlings and flower seeds back to the Sumter area. Her gardens were exquisite and as a result, Sumter has many different kinds of foliage. Not having a Catholic church in which to worship, General Sumter built her a small chapel in the back of "Home House," the Sumter home. In her will, she requested to be buried in the chapel.
