OLEAN - Carmen D. DeGiglio, 57, of 743 N. Union St., passed away peacefully surrounded by family, on Wednesday (Dec. 7, 2022) at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, after fighting a courageous battle with lymphoma.
Carmen was born on Dec. 16, 1964, in Olean, the son of Giasone Mario and Veneranda M. Reitano DeGiglio. On May 18, 2002, Carmen married Elaine N. Cherry at the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels Church.
Carmen was a 1983 graduate from Archbishop Walsh High School. He attended St. Bonaventure University for two years, before transferring to Gannon in Erie, Pa., where he received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He returned to St. Bonaventure to receive his master's degree in business administration.
He worked for Dresser Industries for 13 years as a mechanical engineer, living in several countries, including Singapore for a year. After working at Dresser, he received his insurance license and began a new career as an insurance agent and financial advisor, which he continued until he became ill. Carmen also owned several rental properties in Olean.
Carmen especially enjoyed spending time with his daughter and family. Carmen attended the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and served on several committees, including the finance committee. Carmen was a fourth-degree knight of Columbus and a grand knight. He was a member of the Olean Chamber of Commerce; served as a board member on the Parent Education Program; belonged to the Olean Rotary Club; and volunteered for many non-profit events in Olean.
Carmen enjoyed traveling abroad and vacationing on cruises with his daughter. He was skilled at remodeling and renovations and enjoyed cooking.
Carmen is survived by his daughter, Maria Christianna DeGiglio; her mother, Elaine Cherry DeGiglio, his friend and companion; his mother, Veneranda M. DeGiglio of Olean; a brother, Bruno DeGiglio of Olean; sisters, Maria R. (William) Hastings of Geneva, Patricia LeRoy of Olean and Michelle (Ken) Heidle of Springville; nieces and nephews, Brianna and Benjamin DeGiglio, Kaitlin and Daniel Hastings, Nicholas (Blaga) LeRoy, James (Shreshtha) LeRoy, Jason (Alecia) LeRoy, Kenneth (Kelly) Heidle, Megan (Brent) Schiele and Bethany Heidle; great-nieces and great-nephews, Christian LeRoy, Laurel LeRoy, Kenneth, Samuel and Mackenzie Heidle, and Owen and Rory Schiele; and longtime friends, Duane Karl and Steve Bielecki. Carmen will also be greatly missed by his loyal dog, Corey.
Carmen was predeceased by his father, Mario DeGiglio; and grandparents, Carmen and Pasqualina Reitano.
Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday (Dec. 14, 2022) at Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., 646 E. State St., Olean. Funeral services will be held, beginning with a prayer service at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday (Dec. 15, 2022) at the funeral home, followed by a 10 a.m. mass of Christian burial at the Basilica of St Mary of the Angels. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
