Alfredo loved the farm life. He was an expert in growing green chili, corn, a variety of vegetables and fruit. He especially had a niche for growing grapes and making his own homemade brew of wine. Throughout his early years of life, he was sent to Menual Indian School in Albuquerque for the sole purpose of getting a higher education. He also learned English and loved playing football in 1910 while attending School. Menaul High school was a Presbyterian Missionary School and their out-reach was working with the Indians in the Reservations. His brother Froilan also attended Menual and completed his schooling there. Alfredo's time there was short after a fire broke out and the school burned down in 1910. Many records were destroyed. Alfredo decided to return home to his family in Bosque, NM. Through his endeavors and as jobs came about to work for the Santa Fe Railroad, he was highly requested as an interpreter. He had many stories to tell since lawless occurred in New Mexico during this time. He recollects the many successful attempts that had been made to rob the train by train gangs. He did not last long working for the Santa Fe Train. Instead he took other jobs that were offered to him as a Shepherd. Of course the love for family and farm life always brought him back home to Bosque, New Mexico. On July 7, 1913, he married Seferina Romero (orphaned and raised by her brother), but being that she was quite a beauty with pretty green eyes and with unusual talents as a seamstress and a Good Samaritan, she was so loved by all who knew her. No wonder he fell in love with her. Life in Bosque brought many children to the Chavez family. Twelve in all with two early death. Though life was poor, they remember there was no lack of love for each other.
