This is a tragic story. William had been repatriated at the end of WW1 and was being treated in the Queen Alexandra Military Hospital on Millbank. On Feb 16, he and his sweetheart Bridget Stack married at St Mary's Parish Church, Lambeth. Exactly one week later Bridget died, a victim of the second wave of the great influenza pandemic, and the following day William himself succumbed to the flu.

William had served in the war in the Royal Army Ordnance Corp under the name "Chapman". This was the maiden name of Bridget's mother. The families lived close to one another in Lambeth and Bridget and William may have been sweethearts before the war. Presumably, he used this alias to avoid any negative connotations from his German family name. ~ Written by Colin McKinnon
