All through her life Carrie was a writer of poems. Although she had no musical sense of pitch and could not carry a tune, she was richly blessed with poetic rhythm and hundreds of her poems were published as the words to hymns. One of them, Face to Face, has remained a hymnal standard that beautifully expresses the enduring hope of the Christian believer to one day be eternally home with the Saviour.
Carrie Elizabeth (Ellis) Breck was born January 22, 1855 in Walden, Caledonia County, Vermont, the second of seven children and only daughter of Stephen and Elizabeth (Coburn) Ellis. The Ellises were farmers and moved to the Vineland area in Cumberland County, New Jersey, in 1863, and it was here that Carrie spent much of her life. Her parents raised their children in a devout Christian home that has had lasting impact through the generations. In addition to Carrie's calling as a hymn writer, several descendants of Stephen and Elizabeth served as missionaries in both home and foreign fields. Carrie married Frank Breck on May 28, 1884, and their family grew to include daughters Grace Marion, Flora Elizabeth, Laura Ellis, Eleanor Ruth and Gertrude Evelyn. Two little sons, Clarence Frank and Edwin Walter, died in infancy. Frank Breck was in the grape juice business and in the 1910s the family relocated to Portland, Oregon. Carrie died March 27, 1934 in Portland.
Face to Face
Words by Carrie E. Breck
Music by Grant Colfax Tuller
Face to face with Christ my Saviour,
Face to face--what will it be?
When with rapture I behold Him,
Jesus Christ who died for me.
Chorus:
Face to face shall I behold Him,
Far beyond the starry sky;
Face to face in all His glory,
I shall see Him by and by!
Only faintly now, I see Him,
With the darkling veil between,
But a blessed day is coming,
When His glory shall be seen. [Chorus]
What rejoicing in His presence,
When are banished grief and pain;
When the crooked ways are straightened,
And the dark things shall be plain. [Chorus]
Face to face! O blissful moment!
Face to face--to see and know;
Face to face with my Redeemer,
Jesus Christ who loves me so. [Chorus]
