US Congressman. He operated a South Carolina plantation called Mountain Shoals and held several local offices in Enoree and Spartanburg County, including Justice of the Peace and member of the state House of Representatives. Long active in the militia, he commanded troops as a Colonel during the War of 1812, and was later elected Brigadier General and commander of South Carolina's 10th Brigade, and Major General and commander of South Carolina's Fifth Division. In 1816 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democratic-Republican. He was reelected five times, the last two as a Jacksonian, and served from 1817 to 1831. He did not run for reelection in 1830 and returned to operating his plantation. The home at Mountain Shoals still stands, and is sometimes referred to as the James Nesbitt House. It is privately owned and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
