CIVIL WAR PVT

1861- enlisted Co. I, 17th Mississippi INF.

May 14, 1862- 42nd Mississippi INF Volunteer REG'T was organized in Oxford, Lafayette Co. MS near Memphis TN.

1862- transferred to Co. C, 42nd MS INF to join up with his 2 brothers, THOS L. & ALEXANDER STEVENS, an uncle 'Lieutenant Oliver H. Stevens' (1830-1872) ID#32243202 & brother-in-law 'Stephen Conyers POWERS' (1832-1876 MS) ID#83833717, m. 3-9-1853 MARGARET JANE STEVENS b. abt 1836.

Dec 1862- 42nd MS INF REG'T was assigned to Joseph R. Davis' Brigade (Army of Northern VA; Hill's Corps; Heth's Div), an MS state senator, lawyer & nephew of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

Co. C 42nd called 'Nelson's Avengers' led by COL [then Cap't] Andrew M. Nelson who replaced COL Hugh Reid Miller who was mortally wounded and captured on July 3rd 1863 during Pickett's Charge.

Oct 14, 1863- Killed at 'The Battle of Bristoe Station' in VA.

Gravesite Details

Tombstone located next to his Parents [photo-Member Gary T. Williams] & presumed to be that of their son. Only 180 men were buried on the Bristoe Battlefield with combined casualties of almost 2,000 resulting in a Confederate Defeat.
