Sam became a soldier in the Civil war at the age of 18. He was promoted to drummer when he reported for duty. He was discharged at Keokuk in 1863 because of Chronic Bronchitis. He married Louisa Jane Breazeale around the time of his discharge. They had 11 children together before her death on March 30th, 1881. Four of their children: Eddy, Willie, Minnie and Allie passed before Louisa. He married Jennie Morcey in 1883. Sam married Minerva Harford in 1888. He was preceded in death by his wife and the children previously listed. His daughter Alta Jane Belle Hopkins passed in Dec 1899. Sam was survived by his wife, Minerva, and 6 of his children: John (Laura) Hopkins, Jessie (Mamie) Hopkins, Charles (Naomi) Hopkins, Samuel Hopkins, Mary (Alfred) Snyder and Rachael (Charles) Spiker.
