Dr. Darrell "Red" Holman, 93, a long-time resident of the San Gabriel Valley, passed away February 11, 2008. Dr. Holman was born in Paso Robles on January 12, 1915. He attended Stanford University where he was president of Delta Chi fraternity. After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1937, he earned a Master's in education in 1938. At Stanford, he met Mary Hayes, a resident of Monrovia, whom he married in 1941. In 1948 he graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine. He did his internship at Los Angeles County Hospital, followed by a year as Post Surgeon at the U.S. Army Base in Hurlong, CA. He completed a general surgery residency at Los Angeles County Hospital in 1955. In 1953, he moved his family to Monrovia where they raised their nine children. Dr. Holman entered private practice in Arcadia, where he built the 612 Medical Building in 1965. He served as chief of medical staff for both Santa Teresita Hospital in Duarte and Methodist Hospital in Arcadia. In the 1960s, he was program chairman of the Los Angeles Surgical Forum hosting medical dignitaries at the Santa Anita Race Tract. In 1968 he was elected to the Board of Trustees of Citrus College in Glendora, later serving as the Board President. In 1977 he and several other physicians opened the Arcadia Outpatient Surgery Center, one of the first such centers in California. Dr. Holman had been a member of the Monrovia Kiwanis Club and San Gabriel Country Club. In 1975, he and his wife moved to Bradbury where he kept horses and planted fruit trees. In 1994, his wife Mary passed away. He later married Cecil Dougherty of San Marino. Cecil and Red enjoyed hosting charitable groups, friends, and family at their home. He is survived by his wife Cecil; eight children: William (Carol), Mary Villa, James (Claudia), David, Phillip (Margie), Christopher (Patricia), Steven (Gaye), and Robert; his 23 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his son Thomas in 1991. Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 16 will be held at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Sierra Madre.
