Robert W. (Bob) Yates, 90, of Memphis, died September 22, 2022. He was born August 31, 1932 in Wilson, Arkansas to the late Glover and Pauline Word Yates. He was retired from the University of Memphis after thirty-one years where he was in charge of the undergraduate transfer admissions and non-traditional credit section of the Office of Admissions. Bob was preceded in death by two sisters; Elsie L. McDaniel and Nancy J. Koch; and a brother, H. G. Yates, Jr. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. He graduated from Wilson Arkansas High School in 1950, worked briefly for Delta Products Company at Wilson as bookkeeper and assistant cashier. He then enlisted in the US Air Force where he received training as an administrative specialist at New Mexico Highlands University; serving from 1951 to 1955. Bob earned a Bachelor of Science Degree with honors in Business Administration and a minor in Political Science from then Arkansas State College in 1958, in only three years. After graduating, he worked there a year as assistant director of a state and federal research project and then took a position in the Registrar's Office in charge of undergraduate admissions and records, where he remained for seven years. While in Jonesboro, he was a member of the University Heights Lions Club, serving as secretary-treasurer. Mr. Yates earned a Master of Science in Education degree from then Memphis State University in 1968, majoring in Educational Administration and Supervision, with collateral area of study in Business Management, Guidance and counseling, and Higher Education. During his tenure at the University, he held membership in the American, Southern, and Tennessee Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, as well as Phi Delta Kappa education fraternity. After retirement from the University in 1997, Bob became involved in volunteer activities for 21 plus years at: the Ronald McDonald House, Baptist Hospital Medical Center, and more recently at Baptist Hospital for Women. He was actively involved in the University of Memphis Association of Retirees (UMAR), serving on the executive committee for a number of years. In recognition of his continued involvement with the University and community, he was selected as the 2009 recipient of the UMAR "Traces Award." Bob was a member of the Legacy Society, Society of the Shield, and the Columns Society at the U of M, and a life member of the Alumni Association at the U of M. His body was donated to the Medical Education and Research Institute of Memphis MERI) through the Genesis Legacy of Life Program. Charitable donations may be made to: the Arkansas Baptist Foundation, Little Rock, AR 72204, designated for a scholarship at Arkansas State University; the University of Memphis Foundation, designated for scholarships in the school of music and the school of nursing; or a charity of the donor's choice.
