Scott came to NCSU in 1909 for a Work Course in Agriculture and left in 1911. He was a member of the Alamance Club and YMCA while at NCSU. Presumably he worked on his father's farm following his education.

He was ordered to report to Camp A. A. Humphreys for training in September of 1918. He was a Private in the US Army, 7th Engineers Training Regiment, Company "G".
While there he contracted bronchopneumonia and died on October 8, 1918.

He was the son of NC Senator Scott, and brother of future Governor W. Kerr Scott who also served in WWI.

James Edwin Scott is one of the thirty four men honored by the NCSU Memorial BellTower.
