Martha Poage Moore came from the famous Moores of Abbs Valley, Virginia who were the subject of a book "The Captives of Abbs Valley." Most of Martha's grandparents' family was killed by the Shawnee Indians when they attempted to settle the Abbs Valley in 1786. Her father had been kidnapped by the Shawnee several months earlier, taken initially to Ohio where he was sold into slavery in Canada. Martha's father was later freed and made his way back to Virginia, all as a teenager.

Martha Poage Moore married Abram Still on Jan 22, 1822 in Tazewell Co, VA. Abram was a Methodist minister, physician and ardent abolitionist from North Carolina. The couple had 10 children, including Andrew Taylor Still, the founder of osteopathic medicine. Several served on the side of Union in the Civil War. Other children included Edward Cox Still, James Moore Still, Barbara Jane Still, Thomas Chalmers Still, John Wesley Still, Mary Margaretta Still, Marova Marsden Still, Cassander E Still and Gosembea Still.
