Stephen "Sonny" Jay Rodgers was born on December 19, 1933 in Beaukiss, Texas to Alene Catchings Carter. Sonny went to school in Baytown. He served in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict. While stationed in Cheyenne, Wyoming, he obtained the rank of Master Sergeant. Sonny lived in Ohio for a while, where he topped and trimmed trees. He belonged to the Circleville, Ohio Skydiving Club, where he had 69 jumps to his record. In 1968, he returned to Texas. Sonny was a carpenter, building beautiful homes in and around Taylor. At the age of 40, he returned to school and received a bachelor's degree. He taught CVAE classes for 27 years at the Taylor Middle School. From the age of 9, Sonny loved playing his guitar and singing country music. He performed with well known music entertainers as well as local bands. Sonny enjoyed BBQ cookoffs and began by participating in showmanship with the Taylor Chamber of Commerce cooking team. His best times were with friends and family cooking with The Safari Club, The Chain Gang, Fire Hazard, and finally his own team - Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood.

Sonny was known as a very outgoing, friendly man. He made friends wherever he went. He loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. Sonny spent his leisure time "happy" camping, fishing, barbequing, playing dominos, and entertaining friends and family with parties on his deck.

Sonny is preceded in death by his mother Alene Catchings Carter, stepfather, Woody Carter, brother, Granvel Carter, and great-granddaughter, Emily Rodgers.
