1857—John W. Mathern—1923
John W. Mathern of Calumet, after a short Illness of about six hours, passed away Tuesday, April 17th, at 8:30 p. in. His sudden death came as a great shock to the entire communities of Calumet and Sutherland where he had hosts of friends.

The deceased was born in Iowa county, Iowa, on the 27th day of September, 1857, and was 66 years, 6 months and 20 days old at tho time of his death.

He came to Calumet in 1885, was united In marriage to Cora Breyfogle on the 3rd day of May, 1899. He has resided in Calumet until his death. To this union were born six children; Francis, Willie, Ronald. John Henry, Angeline and Charles, all of whom are at home.

He leaves to mourn bin loss, besides his beloved wife and his children, one brother, Frank Mathern. of LaFerla,
Texas, two sisters, Mrs. Joe Lohberger of Tama, Iowa, and Mrs. Edward Halconio of Los Angeles, Calif., and a large host of loving friends.

Mr Mathern was a true, kind and loving husband and father. He labored zealously for the welfare of his loving family. He was a well respected citizen, and a true and loyal
member of the Catholic church.

Funeral services were held in Sutherland at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Saturday, April 21st, at 10:00 o'clock. Rev. M. C. Wondl officiating. A large number of friends, both from Sutherland and Calumet, attended tho
funeral services, to show their due and last respect to their departed friend. The remains wore laid to rest in the
Calvary Catholic cemetery.

Relatives from out of town who attended tho funeral were: Frank Mathern, a brother, of LaFerla, Texas; Frank and Lee Lohberger of Garwin, Iowa; Mrs. John Crawford of Waterloo, Iowa; Henry Brecht of Watkins, Iowa; Mrs. Aldrich of Garwin, Iowa; Milton and Ernest Breyfogle of Primghar; and August Krueber of Granville. Out of town friends who attended were- Mr. and Mrs. John Kopp of Primghar; Mrs. Barney Hodap of Sibley; Vincent and Sara McClanick and Miss Nellie Bird of Marcus, and Miss Laura Hass of Cherokee.
