Andrew Wesley Scoles, Jr. was killed in the Battle of Champion Hill in the United States Civil War, fighting for the Union Army as part of C Company, 47th Indiana Infantry Regiment. He was originally buried with other Union dead in the Raymond Confederate Cemetery. In 1866 Vicksburg National Cemetery was formed to honor the Union dead; soldiers' bodies were disinterred from their original sites and re-buried in the National Cemetery.

The dependent beneficiary of Andrew's Civil War pension was his mother, Hannah Mercer (Calvert) Scoles, as he was unmarried and had no children.
