Marten Hendrik Woudstra was born in Bergum in the Netherlands in 1922. He graduated from the Reformed Gymnasium in 1942. Afterward he attended the Reformed Theological Seminary in Kampen from 1942 to 1946.

Woudstra came to the United States in 1947. He received a B.D. degree in 1948, a Th.M. in 1949, and a Th.D. in 1964 -- all from Westminster Theological Seminary near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Christian Reformed Church ordained him to the ministry in 1953. He served as professor of Hebrew and OT exegesis at Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan from 1955 to 1985.

Woudstra served as translator and chair of the Old Testament committee of the New International Version translation. He also held the office of president of the Evangelical Theological Society in 1979. He died in Kentwood, Michigan.
