Born in Stockport, Cheshire, England, on the north border of Wales and near Liverpool, in October of 1842. He sailed to Quebec and then took a train to St. Louis, MO where he joined the Union Army. He was in the Civil War all four years, and managed to save several gunboats on the Mississippi river because he was a mechanical engineer. He was with a light artillery group, and mustered out in St. Louis after the war. He then traveled to Massachusetts where he had family, and he settled in the town of West Springfield.
