Eleanor Elaine Berndt, age 96, passed away at the Sarah Hester Home in Benkelman, NE on Saturday, January 28, 2023.

She was born to William Edward and Clara (Hiner) Berndt at her parent's home fifteen miles south of McCook, in Red Willow County on August 22, 1926.

As a child, she attended a one room country school near Cedar Bluffs, KS.

Church was an important part of Eleanor's life. She attended a small church close to her home where "Preacher Young" the pastor, would drive his horse and buggy by their house, the kids would run out and catch a ride to church.

Eleanor grew up in the "Dust Bowl" era when the grasshoppers would eat everything in the garden and field crops.

The family moved in November 1938 to an irrigated farm near Brush, Colorado. There, the family grew produce. It was hard work in the fields and raising a garden for market.

Due to her father's health the family moved back to Nebraska, settling on a farm north of Culbertson.

In 1953, after her father's death Eleanor earned her GED while she was employed as the custodian, babysitting, and taking care of her mother.

Eleanor enjoyed crafts, crocheting, puzzles and visiting family and friends.

A highlight of her life was several visits from relatives from England and family reunions in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Once, while visiting a gold mine in Manitou Springs in Colorado, Eleanor had the opportunity to enter the mine her grandfather worked in.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Clara; sister, Lucille and husband, John Mazurek; brothers, Harold and wife, Ruth Berndt, and Glenn Berndt; nephew, Robert Mazurek.

Eleanor is survived by her sister-in-law, Norma Jean Berndt; nephews, Russell and wife, Cindy Berndt, James and wife, Ester Mazurek; nieces, Marilyn and husband, Tom Bender, and Gail Mazurek; along with many grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel Friday, February 3, 2023 from 10:00AM to 5:00PM.

Funeral services will be held at the Assembly of God Church in McCook on Saturday, February 4, 2022 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Berry Johnson officiating.

Interment will follow the service in the Riverview Cemetery of McCook.
