Joshua served as a Private, Company H, 1st Delaware Infantry during the Civil War.

He enlisted in the 1st Delaware on September 13, 1861. He was noted as being 35 years old, a farmer, and residing in Kent County, Delaware.

His death was recorded by the poet Walt Whitman in his diary. Walt had talked to him the day before his passing.

While in the hospital he was apparently prescribed a mixture of sugar of lead & ammonia which was supposed to be a wash for his feet, but was instead given to him to drink. This caused his death.
