Mayo Hill Dowdle, age 85, died Saturday, February 9, 2008, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM today, Febuary 11, 2008 at Gunter & Peel Chapel with Mike Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Sartor Cemetery in Monroe County, MS with Gunter & Peel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Visitation was from 6:00-8:00 PM Sunday at Gunter & Peel Funeral Home. Mr. Dowdle was born on May 27, 1922 in Liberty, AL to the late Nutie Barmor and Frances Livingston Dowdle. He was an army veteran of WWII serving in the 82nd Airborne in the Pacific. Mr. Dowdle was a master woodcraftsman and has much of his work and many of his pieces located in local homes and churches. He was a member of the Columbus Church of Christ and was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathleen Jones Dowdle, grandson, Gillman E. Ellis, III, brothers, John, Marshall, and Alston Dowdle, Newman Burgess and Belton Burgess; sisters, Addie Lee Bennett, Idell Beaty, and Eva May Edison. He is survived by his wife, Earline Underwood Dowdle of Steens, MS; daughter, Martha M. Ellis (Mike) of Columbus, MS; grandsons, Michael Ellis (Ellen) , Joseph Dowdle Ellis (Debbie) both of Columbus, MS and John Mark Ellis of Dallas TX.; granddaughter, Marty Clark (Mike) of Fayetteville, NC, great grandchildren: Matthew, Tyler, and Shiloh Ellis, stepdaughter, Dottie Clark (John), step grandsons, Kevin Clark (Angie) and Brian Clark (Amy), both of Columbus, MS; step great granddaughter, Sara Clark, and nine nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Michael Ellis, John Mark Ellis, Joseph Dowdle Ellis, Kevin Clark, Brian Clark, and Chester Dowdle.
