Two families united in grief gathered this morning at St. Martin's Roman Catholic church in Laval for the funeral of Nadya Ferrari and her four children, slain last month in Mason, Ohio.

The 33-year old was the victim of conjugal violence, while her four children died in a fire following the fatal fight between their parents.

During the funeral, Ferrari's brother Patrick, remembered his slain sister as a determined athlete who represented Quebec at the Jeux Canada Games in Saskatoon in 1989, and as an exemplary mother. A basket of stuffed toys beside a table holding the cremated remains were a poignant reminder of her four children, Marguerite, Vincent and twins Mia and Jacob.

Ferrari's husband, Michel, has been charged with one count of aggravated arson, four counts of aggravated murder in the deaths of the children and one count of murder in his wife's death.

Ferrari-Veillette, also a former Montreal-area resident, had died of stab wounds. The children were killed by fumes from the blaze.

The couple married and moved to Ohio 12 years ago.

Ferrari and her children were buried after the service in the cemetery beside the church in west-end Laval.
