William Freeman Crump departed this life on Friday, June 3, 2022 at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia. He received his early education in the Newport News School System. He attended Virginia State College earning his Bachelor of Science Degree in Public School Music. After graduating, William was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the US Army. Following his active time in the military, William earned his Master of Arts Degree from Hampton Institute.

William was a faithful member of Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church in Newport News VA, where he served in many roles, but most notably, Director of Music Ministries. He was also a member of the Zeta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.

William was preceded in death by his parents James and Malion Crump; siblings, Crystal C. Jacobs, Louise C. Walker, Alethia C. Howard and Loretta Crump.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 63 years, Barbara H. Crump; daughter, Karla Crump Reaves (Hubert); son, Mark B. Crump (Lisa); grandchildren, Kyndal Crump, Devin and Jerry Simmons; great grandson, Jrue Simmons; sister, Barbara C. Hutchinson; nephews, Wendell Howard, Nelson Howard (Brandy) and Thomas Hutchinson; goddaughters, Vernitia Shannon and Tracey Tabb; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Viewing will be from 3-6 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home. Mr. Crump will lie in state at Ivy Baptist Church, 50 Maple Avenue, Newport News, on Friday, June 10, 2022 beginning at 10 a.m. The Celebration of Life Service will follow at 12 noon. Masks are required***
