Thomas J. Grooms, Sr. was the son of Estel C. and Sarah Ellen (West) Grooms. He was born December 27, 1901 and died at a St. Joseph Hospital, October 27, 1976. He was farmer by trade and farmed his entire life. He married Ruth Lillian Giddens February 22, 1930. She was the daughter of Henry Daniel and Sarah D. (Hines) Giddens. She was born November 23, 1908 near Frazier, Buchanan County, Missouri. Ruth graduated High School at Gower, Missouri, and then became a teacher in the area. After their marriage they resided in the Frazier Community until 1940. At that time they moved to Lathrop, Missouri and continued farming.
After her husband passed away in 1976, Ruth moved to St. Joseph, Missouri where she resided until her death. Thomas a Ruth faced tragedy twice. They lost one child in infancy, he was born and died August 8, 1937. Then another child, Kenneth Eugene Grooms. He was born January 28, 1939 and lost his life in a fire at the home on September 14, 1939. As Ruth tended to her chores and working in their garden, she notice the kitchen was in flames. Her eight month old son was lying on the porch adjoining the kitchen. Before she could reach him, he was burnt beyond recovery. In her attempts to rescue her child, Ruth was burnt about the face, arms and hands.
Their three other children were: Thomas J. Grooms, Jr. who was born about 1930, he was married three times. He married a Beverly Banks, and had three children., He married Dorothy Cheery, and had four children (one set on twins) and then married an Ann (Unknown); Bobby Eugene Grooms married Karen Dodge and had three children; and Patsy Grooms, married a Wendell Ray and had one child, and then married Richard Pierce and had five children (two sets of twins) .
Note: There could be more children born to these couples and the order of their marriages are unknown to me.

LATHROP (Special) - Services for Thomas J Grooms Sr. will be Saturday at 3:30 at the Baptist Church here. The Rev. R. A. Walker will officiate and burial will be in Frazer cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 8 at the Bailey chapel.
Mr. Grooms died Wednesday night at a St. Joseph hospital. He was 75. Born south of Gower, he had lived in Lathrop since 1940. He was a farmer and a member of the Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruth Grooms of the home; two sons, Thomas Grooms of Amarillo, Tex. And Bob Grooms of Grand Junction, Colo.; a daughter, Mrs. Patsy Pearse of Denver, Colo.; four brothers, E. C. Grooms and Max Grooms both of St. Joseph; Francis Grooms of Kidder, and Allaman Grooms of Santa Monica, Cal. And four sisters, Mrs., Hilda Shaw, Mrs. Agnes DeShon, and Mrs. Virginia Thompson, all of St. Joseph, and Mrs. Ada Abington of Kansas City.
