David grew up as a child in Ellinwood, Kansas where he attended St. Joseph's Catholic school. He then moved with his family to a farm north of Cimarron, Kansas. He attended Cimarron High School where he graduated in 1970. David then attended college at St Mary of the Plains. An avid sports fan, David played football, basketball, and track while in high school and continued to play football while in college. David was first married to Gwen Krier, to which three children were born, Michelle, Nicholas, & Jason. He later married Catherine Pennington and they had two children together, Amber & Tayler. David then married Janet Barnes and they had two children, Chelsey & Jamison. David lived in various places throughout the state of Kansas where he worked mostly as a farmer, rancher, and welder. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Along with being a sports fan, David also enjoyed hunting, fishing, writing poetry, playing checkers and cards, metal detecting, and rock and arrowhead hunting.
Survivors include seven children Michelle Skinner of Garden City, KS, Nicholas (Monica) Waechter of Lakin, KS, Jason Waechter of Lakin, KS, Amber Schartz of Mulvane, KS, Tayler (Lydia) Bruce of Dallas, TX, Chelsey Schartz of Wichita, KS, & Jamison Schartz of Garden City, KS; a brother Stephen (Sara) Schartz of Cimarron, KS; four sisters Donna Woods of Cimarron, KS, Marian Reynolds of Coldwater, KS, Bernice (David) Rebein of Dodge City, KS, & Rita (Bill) Hommertzheim of Cimarron, KS; a sister-in-law Pam Schartz of Covinth, TX; and five grandchildren Clay Michel, Luke Waechter, Cole Larkin, Lanee Waechter, & Libby Waechter.
David is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Brian Schartz and Carl Schartz; and a brother-in-law Rusty Woods.
Graveside Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 19, 2022, at the Belpre Cemetery in Belpre, Kansas with Fr. Bernard Felix officiating. There will be no calling hours.
