Texas Christian Advocate, June 31, 1898:
Virgil Phelps, son of Lewis and Jerucia F. Phelps, was born near Athens, Henderson County, Texas, September 9, 1878, and died near Barry, Texas, June 19, 1898, aged nineteen years, nine months and ten days. He professed religion two years ago, under the ministry of Rev. J. J. Canafax. While he did not unite with the Church, for reasons which he thought to be sufficient, yet he gave evidence of salvation which gave great consolation to his dear old grandmother and other loved ones who mourn his absence.
