Irene "Big Granny" was my great grandmother. She was the daughter of Jasper Newton Williams and Mary Alice Miller. She married Ernest Lemual Boyd on 20 Jul 1920 in Hugo, Choctaw, Oklahoma. Ernest and Irene had 5 children. John Newton Boyd (1921–1954), Bonnie Ruth Boyd (1926–2005), Emily Jane, Billy Ray and Willie Lee Boyd. Emily, Billy Ray and Willie died very young.

Big Granny absolutely loved wrestling. When I was 12 maybe 13 years old I spent the summer with her. She did not have a lot of money, lived in a sparsely furnished one bedroom garage apartment with a 9" black and white TV and an empty bird cage. When it came time to watch her wrestling program she would move a chair in front of the little TV and I knew not to bother her until her program was over.

I really loved Big Granny and I wanted to do something nice for her so I saved up the money I had made from doing odd chores and bought her a yellow canary for her empty bird cage. I think I was more heart broken than she was when a week later the bird died.
