Charles Allen Well Known In This City Takes Poison
Last Wednesday night Charles Allen, well known in this city, took a deadly potion of poison and in a quarter of an hour afterwards he was a corpse. The deed was done in a saloon in Neola, a town about twenty-one miles east of here. Allen was seated in the saloon along with some others among whom was Riley Clark, one of the well known residents of Neola. Clark and the others were engaged in conversation when Allen spoke up and asked Clark to set up the drinks to him. His request was met with a flat refusal and Clark called him a loafer and a dead beat.
Allen said nothing further but arose and went to the counter and picking up a glass half filled with water and taking a small package from his pocket emptied the contents, corrosive sublimate, into the glass which he then lifted to his lips and hastily swallowed the contents. His action was noticed by the bystanders but they were either ignorant of what he was doing or it was done so quickly that it was impossible to prevent it. A few minutes after he had swallowed the drug he was violently sick. He died in fifteen minutes after taking the poison in great agony. The body was taken charge of by the undertaker and Coroner Seybert was immediately notified.
