Anna Louise Phillips née Cox: While known and loved by the Nacogdoches community as Ann, she would forever be Anna Louise to her aunts & uncles. Ann passed away in her home on November 9th with both of her children present and her beloved dog, Midnight on the bed beside her. She was born on 23 March 1919 in her grandmother's house on South Fredonia Street in Nacogdoches, Texas to Amelia Moore and Vernon Cox.
She began school in Nacogdoches at Mrs. Nettie Marshall's home and graduated from Hollywood High before attending USC & UCLA where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. A life long Episcopalian, she was baptized by the Rev. George Crockett at Christ Church, Nacogdoches, where funeral services will be held on Tuesday. The funeral will be officiated by the Rev. Karl Griswold-Kuhn and deacon Wanda Cuniff. Ann and her husband Capt. Charles Klingelhofer Phillips, USN (Chuck) were married on 21 June 1939 in Los Angeles. While her life began and ended in Nacogdoches, throughout her marriage, she lived in various locations in the US including Sitka, AK; Guam; the Mojave Desert; North Chicago, IL; the DC area (MD, VA); Philadelphia, PA; and Boston, MA. Upon retirement in 1966, Ann and Chuck moved to Nacogdoches, where they played a significant role in local historic preservation, including rescuing three historic houses, moving them to property Ann inherited from her father, and opening the Tol Barrett House B&B, later Llano Grande Plantation B&B. Together they restored the houses, collected and restored antique furniture to furnish them, and ran the bed & breakfast. As part of her love of history, Ann was a member of DAR, DRT, UDC, Colonial Dames of the 17th Century as well as serving as a docent at the Old University for many years. In addition to being a member of numerous constituent organizations, Ann served as president of the Nacogdoches Federation of Women's Clubs for the planning of both the US bicentennial and the Republic of Texas sesquicentennial celebrations. She enjoyed gardening and arranging flowers and had a deep love of antique roses. She was also very involved with Christ Church, serving on the altar guild for many years. Through her various works, she won numerous awards including induction into the Nacogdoches Women's Hall of Fame, Nacogdoches Chamber of Commerce Public Service Award, the Nacogdoches chapter of the American Association of University Women's Woman of the Year and Friends of Historic Nacogdoches, Inc's Carolyn Ericson Award for Preservation of Historic Resources.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepfather Luis Perez (Luisito), her stepmother Roselle, her half-brother Vernon Mills Cox (Mills), and most recently Chuck, her husband of 65 years.
She is survived by her two children Pamela Ann and Charles Alexander, by her two grandchildren Erin Elizabeth and Alexandra Lee Phillips Garcia (Allee), by Allee's husband Julio and son Adrian Alexander, as well as her step-grandson Samuel Robert Wooldridge, Jr. (Rob) and his daughters Erica Turbeville (husband Ryan) and Samantha. She was also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Additionally, she was survived by her beloved dog Midnight, a constant companion for over 10 years.
Funeral services will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, Nacogdoches on Tuesday (11/15). The funeral will be at 11am with a visitation beginning at 10am. The funeral will be followed by her burial at Oak Grove Cemetery.
