BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. - Rachel Orletta (Arneson) Emerson was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on Feb. 28, 2008, at the age of 96. Born April 6, 1911 to Thorval and Mina Ramsey Arneson she is a life long resident of the Black River Falls area.

Rachel was a strong woman with a great sense of humor. She loved people and it was very important to her to remember her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren on their birthdays as well as remembering many other family and friends on their special days. She married Rolla Saunders in 1929 and divorced in 1948 during a time when divorce was extremely rare, raising 6 boys and one girl on her own. Her strength and tenacity provided an inspiration to her children and grandchildren. She was united in marriage to Edward Emerson on June 14, 1951, and had one more son.

Her love for the outdoors brought her hours of joy and her gardening provided the many fruits and vegetables that she so loved to use in canning as well as the many flowers to brighten her yard and house. Her watermelon pickles were infamous in the local area. Her salt and pepper shaker collection is legendary and she is known by her family as the official historian for all family events and milestones; ever ready with a camera to capture all in attendance. She was a frequent visitor to the residents of the Pine View Care Center with her very dear friend Arliss Bruley. Roma Jones was also a very special friend taking her to Church and being a lifelong friend.

She is survived and very much loved by her children, Duane "Gene" Saunders of Black River Falls, Ronald (Helen) Saunders, Gordon, Jerry (Lorraine) Saunders of Middleburg, Fla., Orletta (Tom) McCormick, La Crosse, Dennis (Marlene) Saunders, Rochester, Wis., Terry Saunders, Oak Creek, Devere Emerson, Black River Falls; 21 grandchildren; 44 great- grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward Emerson; her beloved son Lyman "Red" Saunders; her father; mother; stepfather Albert Arneson; stepbrothers Kenneth Arneson and Clifford Gunderson; daughter-in-Law Butch Saunders; and many other relatives.

Rachel will be missed deeply by her family.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 3, 2008, 10:30 a.m., at Black River Falls Evangelical Lutheran Church, Black River Falls. Rev. Ramie Bakken officiated. Burial was at South Beaver Creek Lutheran Cemetery.
