Charley was born in Kentucky the son of John Montgomery Jr. and his third wife Sarah McKee Minix. He worked as a farmer and operated a store most of his life. On July 10, 1881 he married his first wife Samantha C. McFarland the daughter of Alexander McFarland and Sarah Ann Huff. Charley and Samantha's children are; Louverine (Montgomery) Johnson, Benjamin Montgomery and Ernest Morton Montgomery. In 1896 Charley married his second wife Agnes "Aggie" Stephens the daughter of William Stephens and Nancy Jane Gullett. Charley and Aggie's children are; James Edward "Eddie" Montgomery, Troy Montgomery, Ida Montgomery-died from the flu in 1918, Bidie (Montgomery) Rowe Risner, Genoa Montgomery-died young, Gomer Montgomery and Homer Montgomery. Charley married third wife Lisa (Prater) Holiday. They had no children. Charley's fourth wife was Elva Fugate. They had no children.
