He was born May 8, 1918, to Edmond C. and Odia May (Barr) Warhurst in Newton. They preceded him in death. He married Ruth L. Lewis June 4, 1940, in Newton. She survives of Newton.
He served for 20 years with the Newton Fire Department, another 14 years as fire chief, and then became personnel director for the city of Newton for 11 years. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving for 23 months in the European Theater. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was a life member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, past president and life member of Missouri Valley Fire Chiefs Association, past president and life member of the Kansas State Fire Chiefs Association, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of the American Legion and a member of the Harvey County Historical Society.

Visitation will be until 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday with family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, all at Petersen Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor James Pauley of First Church of God in Newton and Pastor Timothy Conner of First Baptist Church in Newton officiating
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with Friendly Acres Retirement Community, First Baptist Church and the Antique Fire Truck Fund, all in care of the funeral home.
