Howard B. Cook of Crawfordsville passed away Tuesday morning at home. He was born March 29, 1922 in Noblesville.

Howard, Marion and Willard Cook were the sons of Burnie Scott Cook and Pearl Moser Cook and with their father being a minister they lived several places in their earlier years. Howard did live most of his life in and around the Thorntown and Crawfordsville areas. Upon graduating from Thorntown High School in 1940, he attended Taylor University in Upland, Indiana.

Howard's first business endeavor was as owner/operator of Merchants Delivery and Storage in Crawfordsville. There was a fire; but after purchasing adjacent properties, they rebuilt on the grounds of the "Ice Plant" enlarging to cover a city block. They were a pick-up and delivery operation… people didn't have the choices or means of transporting goods and services we have today. They would pick up and deliver most anything… groceries, newspapers, furniture, package delivery items, numerous other items requested. The business expanded by adding the North American Van Lines agency, which was operated for over 20 years. The business also included warehousing and delivering for R.R. Donnelley.

Howard started Pelican Service Company refuse business, which they operated from 1967 until selling it in 1976. The company was the first in the area to utilize trash containers, both large and small.
Howard was also an inventor. He obtained a patent in 1947 for his Electric Tail Gate Lift. Businesses would purchase these lifts and put them out front so people would know they would have them to offer.

Howard was first married to Betty Little for 18 years until her death at age 38. In 1960, he married Maxine Hampton Britton in Crawfordsville, where they lived and operated their businesses until they were sold in 1986 and they retired.

Howard was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during WWII, serving as a Fireman First Class. Howard was a member of the Sugar Plain Friends Church of Thorntown. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Shrine, Elks, American Legion and Crawfordsville Country Club.

He is survived by his nieces, nephews and many loving family members. He was preceded in death by both of his wives, his parents, and both brothers.

Services will be held at Noon, Saturday, October 11 at Burkhart Funeral Home, led by Pastor Mike Whitacre. Visitation will begin at 10 AM. Entombment will follow at Oak Hill Mausoleum.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 911 E. 86th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46240 or the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607, Attn: Development . Online condolences may be made at www.BurkhartFH.com.
