Carol Suzanne Baltz, 74 of Fayetteville, Arkansas, passed away on Sept. 20, 2022, at the
Willard Walker Hospice Home. She was born on March 24, 1948, in Liberal, Kansas, to Oliver Albertus Thurston and Delores Margaret "Margie" Thurston, née Dickman. She spent her early life in Kismet, Kansas. After her family relocated to Hiwasse, Arkansas, she graduated from Gravette High School in 1966. She attended the University of Arkansas, where she met the love of her life and future husband, John Kiefer Baltz. Carol and John were married on April 20, 1968, and reared two sons John Joseph Baltz and David William Baltz.Carol worked at the University of Arkansas for more than 30 years. During her time at the university, she served on numerous committees and was a member of the Staff Senate. She retired as the office supervisor for the Department of Entomology and received emeritus status from the university. Even after retirement, Carol continued to work for the university part-time supporting development efforts for the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences and the Division of University Advancement.
Never one to sit still, Carol found new interests in her retirement. She delivered flowers for a local florist on a seasonal basis, worked on the fundraising efforts for the Ozarks Community Hospital in Gravette, volunteered with the Area Agency on Aging of Northwest Arkansas, and of course cheered on the Razorbacks. It was a seasonal job with H&R Block that sparked her second career. In 2006, she became a professional assistant for the firm, managing offices and human resources throughout the Northwest Arkansas area and other satellite locations for the next 14 years.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Oliver; sisters, Maxine Ratterman and Norma Williams; and half-sister Dorothy Hutchinson. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, John K. Baltz; sons, John and wife Catherine, and David and wife Carolyn and their daughter Lily. She is also survived by two brothers, Ronald Thurston and wife Chris, and Marland Thurston and wife Patty; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Willard Walker Hospice Home for their care and support in Carol's final days.
Rosary service will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Westfield Chapel in Springdale with visitation commencing at 1:30 p.m. The visitation will end at 2:30 p.m. and the interment will be held privately at a later date
