A 6ft goalkeeper from Willington, Fred was signed in the 1929 close season and he made his debut a few weeks later. However , unable to displace Sam Millington, he spent only one year at Stamford Bridge and subsequently played for Linfield where he won an Irish Cup Medal, Barnsley, Manchester City, Aldershot, Walsall and Carlisle United.
