EXCERPT FROM CORPUS CHRISTI CALLER-TIMES 2/6/08:

"A local refinery worker died early Tuesday on his way to work, police said.

"Eric Pierce, 19, lost control of the blue 2003 Subaru Impreza WRX as he was driving north on Farm-to-Market Road 1694, about a mile north of Farm-to-Market Road 665 near Petronila, about 7 a.m.

"Pierce, of Corpus Christi, was thrown from the vehicle after it hit a concrete embankment and tumbled at least 200 feet across a plowed field, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety report. He was wearing a seat belt.

"It appeared he overcorrected while coming into a curve, skidded, then hit a knee-high concrete structure along a small bridge above a ditch, said trooper Manuel Castro, who arrived about 7:15 a.m.

"It appeared hazy when I got there," Castro said. "But I wasn't blinded by sunlight at the accident site."

"The roadway was clear with a posted speed limit of 60 miles per hour. Family members told Castro that Pierce was on his way to work."
