Mary Helen graduated from Savona Central School in 1940 and earned B.A. and M.A. degrees from Cornell University. She taught history in the Greenwood and Chittenango School systems in the late 1940's and moved to Penfield, NY in the early 1950's to take a position as a guidance counselor in the Penfield School system. She was director of the guidance department for many years and remained at Penfield until her retirement in 1978.
When she retired from Penfield, Mary Helen returned to Savona, purchased the Joint Hardware building that had been built in 1896 by her uncles and father, reopened the hardware business, and started Rocking Horse Antiques. She ran her antique business until she retired in 2005.
