Murtes was the daughter of Fleming V. B. Derrick and Sidney Taylor Millholland.

She married Richard M. Keel on 30 April 1892 in Brown County, Texas.

Murtes wrote a story of her mother in "Progressive Farmer" 15 Oct 1927, the title, "Ox Wagons, Indians, and Winchesters". It tells of the adventures of her mother's trip as a child with her parents to California on a wagon train. Her father was the Wagon Captain of the 175 wagons.
She also included a story of how her mother bravely survived with two small daughters during the War Between the States while her husband served in the Confederate States Army.

According to death certificate, Murtes was born Nov 14, 1876 in Texas to F. V. Derrick and Miss Millborn (Millholland). She was married to R. M. Keel. Also according to death certificate the death year was June 29, 1937.

Shannon's funeral home in Fort Worth, Texas was in charge of the arrangements.
