A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Carlisle October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Camp McClure in Chambersburg November 1 as a private with Co. E, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 12, 1863.
Nancy died in 1874, and he married Elizabeth Kepner, fathering Margaret Alice (b. 06/19/69 - married J. W. G. Shindledecker [see below]), Laura E. (b. 12/??/77), John W. (b. 02/14/79), and Ira Franklin (b. 11/18/86). In 1900, he was still living in Washington Township, Franklin County, but died in neighboring Frederick County, Maryland.
NOTE: Although Margaret Alice (Fitz) Shindledecker's death certificate lists Elizabeth (Kepner) Fitz as her mother, the birth date suggests she was more likely Nancy (Benchoff) Fitz's daughter.
