Edith Gertrude Wardlaw Israel went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, December 13, 2020. She was born on December 5, 1933, the sixth surviving child of Samuel Farris Wardlaw and Effie Rosella Stanfield Wardlaw. "Gert" had a Christian influence on many youth in the LaFayette area. She taught Sunday School and Children's Church and wrote and directed plays and musical presentations at the Nazarene Church for many years. She also went out on Sunday mornings and brought children to church. She sang in the choir as well, and sang duets with Gerry Ware. Gert taught school at West LaFayette Elementary for 20 years, earning her bachelor's degree from West Georgia College.

Mrs. Israel was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Israel; her parents; brothers, Albert Wardlaw and sister-in-law, Margaret, and J.D. Wardlaw and sister-in-law, Mary; sister, Betty Jay and brother-in-law, Rev. Eugene Jay; brother-in-law, Buster Hurley Jr; and sister-in-law, Helen Wardlaw.

She is survived by her sister, Helen Hurley; brothers, Aaron Wardlaw, Charles Wardlaw and sister-in-law, Shirley; and by many nieces and nephews, to whom Gert was like a second mother and friend.

Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18, at the LaFayette City Cemetery with Pastor Jason McCarty officiating.

Arrangements are by Wallis-Wilbanks Funeral Home, LaFayette.
