Samuel entered the Union Army, Co. F , 40th Reg. Indiana vollunteer Inf. on Dec. 17 , 1861 . He was in several battles. At the battle of Mission Ridge , Tenn. he was wounded in the right leg on Nov. 25 , 1863 . He had to have his leg amputated below the knee. He was discharged from the Marine Hospital , Cincinnati, Ohio on Oct. 17, 1864.
