Betty was born Aug. 30, 1931, near Terry in Leopold Township, Perry County, Ind., to the late William (1884-1970) and Margaret Hubert Graves (1889-1980). She married Hubert Allen Dowell, Jr. (1930-2015) on Nov. 19, 1955.

She was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, Rockport, Ind.
