Services for Mary L. Smith, 72, will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Pitman-Richman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.

Calling will be 3-7 p.m. Sunday and an hour before services Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Smith died Thursday in Blackford County Hospital, Hartford City, after a long illness.

She was born in Louisville, Kentucky and lived in the Eaton area for most of her life. She was a homemaker and had worked at Ball Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Willis "Gene" Smith; a daughter, Diana Capper; two sisters, Joan Bertram (husband, Charles) and Phyllis Taylor (husband, Jack); two brothers, Roy Arnold (wife, Sue) and David Arnold (wife, Holly); three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Two sons and two sisters are deceased.

Memorials may be made to Cancer Services of Delaware County/Little Red Door.

Obituary for her husband, Willis "Gene" Smith:

Willis "Gene" Smith, 84, passed away Saturday, August 18, 2007 at the Renaissance Health Care & Specialty Hospital of Muncie.

The son of Willis and Eva Blanche (Edwards) Smith, he was born June 6, 1923 in Eaton. He married Mary Arnold on October 30, 1948.

Mr. Smith served his country in the Army during WWII, was a life member of the Indiana Pigeon Club, Amvets Post 23, and retired from Delco Battery after 30 years of employment.

Surviving are his daughter, Diana Capper, Eaton; one sister, Olive May Penner (husband, Jonathan) Berkshire, England; three grandsons, Michael Shelton, John Shelton II, and Christopher Shelton (wife, Michelle), all of Hartford City; and three great grandchildren, Zachary, Casey, and Ethan.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mary, he was preceded in death by a brother, James "Red" Smith; a son, Michael Eugene; and a stepson, Marion Calhoun.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 22, 2007 in the Pitman-RIchman Funeral Home, 200 S. Hartford Street, Eaton, with Pastor Steve DeLisle presiding.

Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, Eaton.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, August 21 at the funeral home and one hour prior to services Wednesday.

Memorials may be made in his name to the donor's charity of choice.
